When you start out in your business, you will usually only have yourself to deal with and motivate. However, as your business grows, you will need the support of a great team behind you.

It is important to build a team who are reliable, hard-working and who you can trust to get on with the tasks you assign them.  A good team will consist of people with a positive, pro-active attitude and the ability to instil this in others.  If you want to build a good team, which helps promote success for your business, these are some points to consider:

1. Common goals

A formidable team will not only work towards their own individual goals but also the goals of the company.  It is imperative that you ensure team members understand the ultimate goal of the company, as this will help them work better together.  For instance, if your goal is to put customer service first, your team members will ensure this is their priority, above anything else.  On the other hand, if your goal is to make as much money as possible, they will be focused on getting sales.  Every business is different in what they want to achieve and team coaching can be a fantastic way to ensure employees understand the company’s goals and “buy in” to them.

2. Set individual roles

It is important that every team member knows what their individual role is and how it fits into the bigger picture – and you should define these from the offset.  When individual roles are unclear, it can cause a lot of confusion, resentment and unrest in a team.  It is important to set individual roles, as this will help you to build a formidable team.

3. Trust

Remember that your team is there to work for you, and they want to support you, so make sure you trust them to do their job.  Trust will go a long way to creating a happy and successful team who will be loyal to you.  Resist the urge to micromanage.  Your business may be your baby but if you don’t trust your team, why did you employ them in the first place?

4. Communication

This is one of the most important aspects of creating a good team.  You should allow your team members to express their views and concerns, and listen to any feedback they give you.  It is also important to take any feedback on board and put good ideas into practice.  A great team will inspire each other and will offer ideas, which will benefit the business.  This is more likely if they feel their ideas will be appreciated.  A strong communication strategy is key.

5. Team building

Members of a team can become closer if you involve them in team building exercises, where they can get the opportunity to work together and learn from each other.  It is important to incorporate some kind of team building as part of your staff engagement strategy for the overall success of your business.

6. Training
